For the past three weeks, the Grade 5/6 students have been learning about the role of government in Canada and how responsible citizens can make a difference in their country, mainly by exercising their right to vote. The Grade 5/6 class is gearing up and getting ready to VOTE on Friday, October 16th during last block. They will be voting in a STUDENT VOTE program offered by CIVIX, a non-partisan Canadian organization that aims to develop the skills and habits of citizenship among young Canadians. By participating in this student vote and voting for real candidates from the Ottawa-Centre riding, the Grade 5/6 class will be demonstrating their understanding of the electoral process in Canada.
All across Canada, citizens are encouraged to participate in the Canadian federal election that will take place on Monday, October 19th. To promote the importance of participating in the democratic process, Grade 5/6 students have made posters that aim to encourage Canadians (who are 18+) to go out and vote. We will be displaying these posters in the hallway for the days leading up to our vote.
As a teacher, I am proud to see the Grade 5/6 students so passionate about our student vote process... it makes me hopeful that one day, each of these students will participate in a real election when they become the age of majority.
I will post an update with the results from our own election in class... so stay tuned!
À bientôt,
Mme. Biber
